Madrid, Spain

A rooftop pool and sundeck, elegant contemporary décor and a discreetly smart location near the best shops, plus easy airport access all add up to make the four-star NH Collection Madrid Colón a top choice for regular visitors to the Spanish capital. The hotel is on the corner of the Plaza de Colón and the Paseo de la Castellana in the upscale Salamanca neighbourhood. The smart shopping streets of Serrano and Goya are on the doorstep. The National Archaeological Museum is across the square and the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums are 15 minutes' walk away. It is 10 minutes on foot to the Retiro Park. Colón and Serrano metro stations are a couple of minutes away.

The hotel is the right side of town for the airport without getting too snarled up in traffic and Recoletos train station, with a direct service from Terminal 4 (used by British Airways and Iberia) is a five-minute walk.

Style & character

7 / 10

The building was designed in the mid-20th century by the prestigious architect Luis Gutiérrez-Soto and was totally remodelled to become the hotel in 2016 by the renowned designer Mercedes Isasa. The purple walls, scarlet sofas and charcoal carpet in angular shapes in the lobby make you feel as if you are walking into a Kandinsky painting. Potted plants and a curving, wrought-iron balustrade on the roof terrace create a secret seaside vibe in this very urban environment.

Grey and ivory striped wallpaper and wooden floors create a calm vibe in the 146 comfortable rooms and Junior suites, with pops of crimson to pep things up. Beds have thick, top-quality mattresses, soft sheets and shimmery silver padded headboards. All rooms have a safe (free), a Nespresso machine and a kettle. Desks have well-placed sockets, including USB, and good lighting. Bathrooms have rain showers and some also have tubs. Products are good quality, NH own-brand, and there are Black Mambo hairdryers.

Food & drink

8 / 10

The hotel has an attractive lobby bar that serves coffee and a wide range of drinks and snacks, including a quinoa salad (€9.90/£9) and a beef and guacamole wrap (€9.60/£8.50).

In summer drinks are available alongside the rooftop pool. There is a branch of the excellent 99 Sushi restaurant in the building, which you can access from within the hotel. Also part of the building is Platea, a vast cinema that has been turned into a spectacular gastronomic complex, with a huge selection of cuisines and drinks on offer. There are often cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, exhibitions, performances, live music or DJs to liven things up as well.

The breakfast buffet, in a light-filled space, is available from 7am-10.30am Monday to Friday, 8am-11.30am Saturday and until noon on Sunday. There is also a simpler breakfast from 5am until 7am if you need to leave early. There is an impressive selection with great juices, pastries, fruit, cheese, charcuterie, yogurts, gluten-free options and non-dairy milks. Hot food is cooked to order. You can put together your own mix of fruit and veg in a jar and the servers will blitz it for you. You can also choose your favourite ingredients from the buffet to add to an omelette or scrambled eggs for the chefs to prepare.

The room service menu is well devised with dishes including oven-roasted hake with grilled vegetables (€21/£19).
