Devon, England

This five-bedroom Georgian hotel, set in a lushly-planted walled garden in the south Devon village of Chillington, has been given a stylish and uplifting mid-century-style makeover by its new owners. Lovely breakfasts, welcoming hosts and a make-yourself-at-home atmosphere make this one of our favourite Devon retreats.

Location

7 / 10

Chillington is a nondescript but conveniently located village three miles from Slapton Sands beach and Slapton Ley Nature Reserve. It’s 11 miles from Dartmouth and five miles to one of Devon’s most spectacular coastal walks, from Start Point to East Prawle. Yachtie Salcombe is 11 miles away and Dartmoor National Park is 18 miles away.

Style & character

9 / 10

In the land of grand country house hotels, this informal and modern Georgian family home comes as a refreshing change. New owners Katie and Chris Denny have retained all the classic Georgian features – fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling sash windows, wood floors and decorative plaster ceilings – but have given the décor a colourful facelift, swapping boxy vintage pieces for sleek-lined, mid-century furniture, pretty wallpapers and dramatic contrasting colour schemes (the canary yellow sofa and floor lamp set against a dark blue living wall is a stunning combination). Irreverent artwork, such as a painting of Mona Lisa blowing gum, add a comical touch.

Service & facilities

There’s a small bar looking onto the gardens through double doors, two comfortable lounges – both with fireplaces – a pretty breakfast room with a racing-green button-backed banquette and French windows leading out onto a sunny terrace. The well-kept garden has a swing and trampoline. The hotel is child and dog-friendly, with dogs allowed off the lead everywhere except the breakfast room. Free parking. Still finding their feet during my stay (it was only their second day of opening), Katie and Chris were nonetheless confident and welcoming hosts.

Bathrooms are stylish throughout, with powerful showers and REN toiletries. A sixth family-friendly room with a sofa bed is due to open in the attic in 2020.

Food & drink

Breakfast is in the pretty conservatory overlooking the gardens. On the buffet is a decent selection of cereals, fruits and pastries, with cooked options that include a full English, bacon or sausage sandwich, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, and boiled eggs with marmite soldiers. Good local options for dinner include The Millbrook in South Pool and The Crabshell in Kingsbridge.
