There’s no doubting the greatest passion of Olympic athlete Dame Mary Peters: throughout her life it has been sport, and more sport. But something else delights her too, and it’s clothes.
The footage of her on her victory parade in Belfast, after she returned to Northern Ireland with her gold medal won at the 1972 Munich Olympics for the pentathlon, shows her waving to the huge crowds, dressed in a violet minidress.
“People were hanging out of the windows celebrating because things were so difficult then during the Troubles”, she recalls.
But Dame Mary knew how to party. A 1960s photo on her office wall shows her encircled by the Rolling Stones while she sips champagne, dressed in a blue cocktail...
